Pianist-Composer Moshe S. Knoll received his B.M. and M.M. Degrees
from The Juilliard School, where he studied Piano with Herbert Stessin,
William Masselos and Beveridge Webster; and Composition under David
Diamond, Michael White and Lawrence Widdoes. He also studied
Composition with David Gilbert at Bowdoin College, Brunswick, ME; and
Analysis of Twentieth Century Music with Chou Wen-Chung at Columbia
University. He holds a D.M.A. Degree from the University of Arizona, where he studied Piano with Ozan Marsh and Composition under Robert
Muczinski and Daniel Asia. He has also received additional mentoring in composition from Vincent Persichetti, Richard Danielpour and in baroque Performance Practice from Anthony Newman.
(Michael White and Lawrence Widdoes were both pupils of Vincent
Persichetti).
Born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela, Moshe Knoll studied piano with
Yolanda Navarro de Martínez (pupil of Rosita Renard and Angélica
Morales von Sauer), with the noted American virtuoso Harriet Sehrr
(pupil of Isabella Vengerova), with Carlos Duarte (pupil of Magda
Tagliaferro), and with Elizabeth Westerkamp (pupil of Vincenzo
Scaramuzza). Dr. Knoll studied Harpsichord Performance and Basso Continuo with Yocheved Schwartz and Miri Singer (pupil of Gustav Leonhardt) in Israel.
Having lived and worked for many years in Israel before his return to
New York, Moshe is a versatile performer whose repertoire embraces a
variety of style-periods from the Baroque to the music of our time. A
Staff Pianist at The Mannes College, The New School for Music, Moshe
has also taught at the Special Music School, Kaufman Music Center, at the Connecticut Conservatory of Music and Dance, The Mary Louis Academy, Temple Israel Center, The Music Institute of Long Island and at the Petakh-Tikva Municipal Conservatory of Music in Israel. He has served as Harpsichordist, Arranger and Librarian for the
“Apollonia Ensemble for Early Music” in Herzliyah, Israel, under the
directorship of Miri Singer.
Currently he holds the position of Composer-in-Residence and Director
of Musical Research at ArtsAhimsa, serving as Faculty member of the
ArtsAhimsa Music Festival. Dr. Knoll also works as Staff Pianist at Ballet Hispánico School of Dance in NYC.
Dr. Knoll has performed in Israel with noted musicians, such us the
Chilean soprano Macarena Lopez-Lavin, the American flutist Wendy
Eisler-Kashy (Duo Ha-Sharon), the French violin virtuoso Gabriel
Chouraki, the Israeli flutist Ya’arah Wein-Tzafrir, the Israeli violist Gad
Levertoff, and the Israeli cellist Rivkah Peled Orr (Classical Duo Ha-
Menagnim). He has also accompanied the German baritone Johannes Held in Lieder recitals. Currently he performs with the noted American violinist Laura Jean Goldberg (the Goldberg-Knoll Duo), as well as with the soprano Allison Charney. His solo performances have included recitals in Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, the Dag Hammarskjold Auditorium at the United Nations, the Bohemian National Hall and The JCC Manhattan. He has appeared as soloist with orchestras in Venezuela and in a concerto recording with the London Symphony Orchestra.
Dr. Knoll’s compositions have been performed at various venues in the
USA and more than 80 of his Compositions are now published by Sheet Music Plus.
His music has been heard at The Juilliard School, at Weill
Recital Hall, Carnegie Hall, at Alice Tully Hall, the Lincoln Center, the Dag Hammarskjold Auditorium (United Nations), the Kaufman Music
Center (Merkin Hall), Symphony Space and other venues. Elsewhere in the USA, Knoll’s compositions have been heard at the Bowdoin International Music Festival, the Chautauqua Music Festival, the
NJPAC, the LyricaFest Chamber Music Festival, Lincoln, the ArtsAhimsa Music Festival in Lenox, the Catamount Arts Concert Series, the University of Arizonaa and various other venues across the USA. Overseas his music has been performed in Venezuela, Brazil, the UK, Germany and Israel.
He has composed part of the soundtrack for the documentary movie
"God Knows Where I am", produced by Todd and Jedd Wider. This score was recorded by the Manhattan Symphonie, under the baton of Maestro Gregory Singer and his Meditation II for solo piano has been recorded by the Russian Pianist Anna Sutyagina for Moving Classics TV, in Munich, Germany.
Dr. Knoll was awarded “Artist of the year 1987 Award” from the Pianist’s Foundation of America and he is on the Board of Dvorak American Heritage Association.
